Home / Subfloor Preparation & Repair in London

Why Subfloor Preparation Matters

Over time, timber subfloors naturally shift and lose stability due to changes in humidity, temperature and ongoing movement within the building. What was once a solid and level structure can become uneven, weak and unreliable, which directly affects the new floor.

At I. B. Flooring Services, we inspect the subfloor and recommend the right solution. If needed, we carry out a full reconstruction — lifting the floor to the joists, reinforcing the structure, adding insulation and installing 18mm plywood to create a strong, level base, ready for your new wooden floor and the most suitable installation method.

Since the floor is already being lifted and the subfloor rebuilt, this is the perfect opportunity to upgrade the acoustic performance.

Additional Impact Insulation

We can supply and apply a high-quality rubber underlay on top of the plywood, significantly reducing impact noise and improving sound insulation between floors.

The new wooden floor can then be installed directly on top using a glue-down system, creating a solid and stable finish. This solution is also suitable for use with underfloor heating.

Self-Leveling Compound

When old flooring or tiles are removed, concrete subfloors are often left uneven, rough or damaged, making them unsuitable for direct installation of a new wooden floor.

In these cases, we apply a professional self-levelling compound to create a smooth, level and solid surface. Modern compounds are fast-drying, allowing for minimal disruption and quicker project completion.

After application, we carefully monitor the drying process using a professional moisture meter. This ensures the subfloor has reached the correct moisture levels before installation, preventing any residual moisture from being absorbed into the new wooden floor.

Once fully cured, the surface is ready for both glue-down and floating floor installation, ensuring proper stability and long-term performance. This solution is also suitable for underfloor heating.
